Domain Update

There has been a lot of misinformation on social media regarding the Domain, so we thought it would be good to give you an update from official sources. Our Kerikeri did not exist during the submission process. A number of our leadership team made personal submissions. Their experience of the consultation process was positive. After reading all submissions from the community, they were pleased with the end result.

The Domain is a special place and needs to be protected and treasured as our only green space in the CBD. Our Kerikeri believes that the plan pays respect to how special this place is, whilst also providing flexibility on the planned outer perimeter. This flexibility could include exercise apparatuses, landscaping, improvements to security, provision for events and an enhanced play area for children and families, all while retaining the central open area for social sports and events. FNDC is actively seeking to purchase land for a new sports hub as we have a number of sports codes not adequately catered for.

We are worried about the level of misinformation out in the public realm e.g. comments that a road is running through it, commercial buildings are being built, no green space will be left etc.  We encourage you to take 5 minutes to look at the approved plan.

We understand that the newly demolished Pavilion held sentimental value with many positive and fond memories, but according to FNDC, the Pavilion was significantly fire damaged, asbestos identified, and the cost of repairing was prohibitive.  FNDC alone made the decision to demolish the Pavilion, but we believe this was the right decision in the long term.

FNDC had resolved last year to form a “Domain Management Committee” and had delegated this task to the Community Board to manage the incorporation.  We have asked for an update on where this is at as this will dictate next steps for improving this special place.
