Security in Kerikeri

The Chair of Our Kerikeri, Annika Dickey and the new President of Kerikeri Business Association, Sarah Curtis spent the afternoon learning about the security in Kerikeri including the CCTV setup, speaking with Council, a current volunteer and a security company. Much work needs to be done in this space to bring our security into the 21st century.

Recently, Focus Paihia and Paihia Business Association applied for funding through the Proceeds of Crime fund for 60 + security cameras in Paihia, Haruru Falls, Waitangi, Te Haumi and Opua. We got to see these cameras in operation. The clarity, zooming features, number plate recognition and other technological features are proving to be worth their weight in gold. They have been able to assist the police quickly with thefts, vandalism and assaults etc.

As times get tough and as we come out of 2 years of COVID restrictions, the level of this activity seems to be increasing. We acknowledge CCTV and the police are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff and is not the sole solution to these crimes, however they are vital to our town if we are to provide some deterrent to this behaviour and to hold people to account.

If you would like to volunteer to assist us in pursuing an upgrade to our systems including grant application preparation, please contact annika@wwc.co.nz.
